Overview
Herpes simplex is the medical name given to a viral disease, which is caused by the herpes simplex virus 1 or 2. This disease may cause oral and genital herpes. It is also known to cause neonatal herpes, Mollaret’s meningitis, encephalitis, Bell’s palsy, herpetic whitlow, ocular herpes, herpes gladiatorum, etc.

Signs & Symptoms
The symptoms may vary according to the underlying disease present in the body.
- Herpetic gingivostomatitis is the first stage to infection.
- Herpes labialis is the stage where blisters occur in mouth and abraded skin.
- Herpes genitalis is formed when there are presence of vesicles and papules on the outer surface of the cold sores.
- Herpetic whitlow may occur in the fingers and thumbs.
- There may be swelling of the eye in the herpetic keratoconjunctivitis.
- Brain infections are present in case of herpesviral encephalitis and herpes viral meningitis.
Prevention
Try to follow safe sex, try to stick with one partner at a time and avoid oral sex to avoid this disease.
